Star Trek

May 30, 2018

About the movie:

Star Trek is an American science fiction movie released in 2009. It was directed by J.J Abrams and written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. It is the eleventh movie in the Star Trek movie franchise.

About the main actors:

  • Chris Pine as James T. Kirk
  • Zachary Quinto as Spock
  • Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura
  • Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy

About the plot:

The movie takes place in the 23rd century. At the beginning of the story, a Federal starship is attacked by a Romulan ship which emerged from a storm. The USS Kelvin’s captain has to go to the enemy ship to negotiate. Unfortunately he is killed, endangering his ship. The latest crew has to flee. Yet,  its new captain Kirk is to stay on board and sacrifices himself to ensure the survival of the crew, especially his wife’s safety who is pregnant. She gives birth and her husband has just the time to name his son Jim T Kirk.

Seventeen years later on the planet Vulcan, the other protagonist is presented: Spock. He has accepted to join the Vulcan Science Academy but he eventually goes to Starfleet when he realizes that his human mother is seen as a “disadvantage”.

On Earth Kirk becomes a reckless but intelligent young adult. Kirk meets Captain Christopher Pike, who encourages him to enlist in Starfleet Academy, where Kirk meets and befriends doctor Leonard McCoy.

Together they fight against Romulan, haunted by the thought of avenging himself. Indeed, his planet has been destroyed, killing all the inhabitants.

About the main characters:

Jim T Kirk: He joins Starfleet on a dare. He is brave and courageous as he would do anything to reach his aims. For example, at the beginning he is not assigned to the Entreprise so he becomes sick on purpose to join this ship. He does not fear anything and can sacrifice himself for the safety of the crew. He likes flirting with women; we can notice this behaviour all along the movie. He is sarcastic and arrogant which makes him funny. He can’t support orders for he wants to follow his instincts.

Spock: He is half-human and half-Vulcan. He joins Starfleet when he understands that his human part would always be a drawback for him in the Vulcan Science Academy. He cannot bear any reflection about his human mother. It is the only thing that makes him angry. Indeed, normally as a Vulcan, he should not feel any emotion, but thanks to his human side, he can. He is one Jim’s best friends and is an important part of the crew. He usually disagrees with Jim on decisions because it is not rational. The actor even said “he is constantly exploring that notion of how to evolve in a responsible way and how to evolve in a respectful way”. He equally cannot lie because or thanks (it depends on the situation) to his Vulcan side.

Why I like the movie

I discovered this movie last summer thanks to a friend. His dad was a big fan of Star Trek and so he wanted me to watch it. At first glance, I thought it would be like Star Wars (even the name is close). Indeed like Star Wars the movie takes place in the entire universe not only on Planet Earth. Technology has been improved so well that new planets and new living beings have been discovered. It is really science fiction and usually I am not fond of unrealistic movies. Yet,  this movie is really good, as far as I am concerned, for a few reasons. Firstly, all the characters are very special and likeable for their own reasons. They are all very different especially Spock and Jim, but that is exactly why it is so good: even if everything opposes them, they both need each other. We can say that the friendship theme is developed: they both do everything to save their friends, up to sacrificing themselves. Secondly, I especially like the plot. I found interesting to discover the characters, first of all separately to realize how different they are, and then together to see how they can work together despite their personalities. There are lots of actions and suspense so we cannot be bored. Finally I would say that I like the way the movie makes us feel different emotions. We can cry and laugh but also be scared and terrified and happy, in just 2 hours.
