The Leftovers is a TV drama series airing on the famous American channel HBO which is also quite known for producing other award receiving tv shows such as Game of Thrones, True Blood or Six Feet Under. It now has 2 seasons and the third one is to premiere in October 2016.
The Leftovers stars actor Justin Theroux (who’s now Jennifer Anniston’s boyfriend by the way), Amy Brenneman, Margaret Qualley, Christopher Eccleston and Liv Tyler.
The series is quite particular in my opinion because the plot is very unique. Indeed we follow the main characters in their life 3 years after the tragic and unexplained disapperearence of 2% of the world’s population on October 14th. As you can expect, the whole world is rocked and traumatized by the miraculous event.
The main character, Kevin Garvey (potrayed by Justin Theroux) is a police officer in a small town in the state of New York called Mapleton. Kevin lives with his teenage daughter but he used to live with his wife and son as well.
Nonetheless, Kevin’s wife and son didn’t disappear like the 2% of the population of the world, they both left their home and family, by choice. They both went their separate ways to support their social convictions because it happens that they found two group leaders, or gurus, who have a major influence and hold on them.
At the very beginning of the series, Kevin’s wife Laurie, is already with her sect called The Guilty Remnant. The Guilty Remnant is a very odd working sect with unique particularities; they only dress in white, they’re mute by choice and only communicate by writing, they have to smoke cigarettes all the time, they follow people, stalk them and stay in front of their houses in order to be ”living reminders” of the October 14 event.
The first season of the series is in my opinion quite disturbing – not that it changes for the rest of the series – because very strange and random events happen all the time. Moreover, the dialogues and relationships between the characters are also particular. All that creates an unsettling atmosphere but also a very catchy series that you absolutely want to continue to know its outcome and the truth.
Moreover, the psychology of the characters is quite well developed. First of all, in the very first episodes, we learn that Kevin’s father was also chief of police but had an early retirement because he was schizophrenic. Thus we see Kevin visit him in the psychiatric hospital where he confesses to his father that he has been seeing unreal and crazy things…
To sum it all up, I could say that The Leftovers is a one of a kind tv show that surprises the viewer as soon as he watches the first episode. As a matter of fact, when I first watched the show, I was completely unsettled and didn’t understand the concept of the series, but I’m very glad I continued it!
