Azzedine Alaïa’s exhibition
Azzedine Alaïa is a French fashion designer and dress maker from Tunisia. He followed fashion and sculpture classes in the « Beaux-arts » of Tunis. He came to Paris at the end of the 1950’s; in 1957 when he collaborateed with the great fashion designers : Christian Dior, Guy Laroche, Thierry Mugler. He learnt how to create fashion, becoming the « little prince » of Louise de Vilmorin because he is really small ( he is only 1,68 meter tall, which is really short for a man). Fastly he becomes friend with the most famous models like Naomi Campbell and Stephanie Seymour.
He created his own private customers’ base when he began to make his own dresses for Simone Zehrfuss, Cécile de Rotshild, Greta Garbo or Arletty. In the middle of the 1980’s he decided to create his Azzedine Alaïa brand. His sheath dresses stretch, his zip-up dresses and lycra’s body shed in light the perfect bodies of Grace Jones, Tina Turner and Farida Khelfa. Then these creations were photographed by Jean-Paul Goude and Jean-Baptiste Mondino to be covers of fashion magazines. He received 2 fashion Oscars in 1985; at that time his reputation became worldwide.
In 1990 he bought an old warehouse of the BHV in the district of the « Marais ». At that time he started a permanent show : the « All-Paris » blows in. Dinners, fashion shows and exhibitions of artists Alaïa loves are on the programme.
In 1991 he created a mini-creation for Tati’s shop.
In 2000 he exhibited for the first time his creation at the Guggenheim in New York. The same year, his brand along with other fashion brands were bought by luxury groups; he collaborated with the Italian brand Prada and then sold his brand to the Italian designer before re-buying it 2007.
After some exhibitions in fashion museums he went into the strict and serious circle of « haute couture » in 2011. On July 7th he closed the fashion week with a fashion show applauded by 240 guests who made a standing ovation for ten minutes on the Boris Vian’s song « Je suis snob ».
In 2012, the Groninger museum in Holland dedicated an exhibition to this fashion designer always dressed in a Chinese black suit.
And this year the Galliera museum is re-opening its doors with an exhibition of Alaïa’s most spectacular dresses.
Once more, it’s a fashion exhibition which attracted me but this time they are not common dresses.
Alaïa may be the most original fashion designer in the world. He collaborated with the Crazy Horse, the most famous models, actresses and even singers : he recently dressed Rhihanna with a wonderful red dress.
This exhibition is once more a way to show to the rest of the world that this little man didn’t lose his creativity, his imagination and his amazing talent. He uses different materials to create different effect. He knows how to cut out, to sew and handle crocodile’s leather.
He uses beads and pearls to re-create an African style inspired of his travel. He never follows the code of fashion and doesn’t care about what people think about his creation because his vision of fashion appeals to Paris’s population. Now Alaïa is a reputed fashion designer all around the world and he deserves it because he always takes risks, affirms his tastes and creates a new skin for women : the fashion skin, symbol of his huge talent.
