Panda

February 28, 2013

During my trip in China, I saw Pandas in a zoo. It was the first time that I had seen those animals, they were so cute : they were 5, one of them was sleeping and snorted a lot, another was playing on a swing, and the others were eating bamboo. At that moment, I didn’t care about the other animals, all I wanted was to stay with the pandas. Maybe that’s because they are especially in Asia, and I knew that I couldn’t see them again before a long time. Panda have become my favourite animal, and the fact that they are endangered makes me very sad.

The Panda is also known as the “giant panda” in order to differentiate it from the “red panda”. It is easily recognized by the large black patches around its eyes, on the ears and on its arms and legs. It belongs to the Carnivoras but its diet is 99% composed of bamboo, the 1% corresponds to carcasses.

They live in a few mountains ranges in central China, above all in the Sichuan Province, but also in the Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. Because of the deforestation the panda has been driven out of the lowland areas where they used to live. One estimate shows that there are about 1.590 pandas living in the wild, the number of pandas is on the rise. It is the animal the most adored and protected of the world.

Pandas became China’s second national emblem : it is used in international contexts like the Five Fuwa mascots of the Beijing Olympics.
